Vršac is one of the oldest towns in Banat. The first written record of the town, famous for its wine and wind, appears in the distant 1427 in the form Podvršan. The inhabitants of this beautiful, peaceful town under the hill are proud of their vineyards, famous Vršac wines, exceptional cultural heritage and architecture that speak of the history and specific life of the region. On the top of Vršac hill stands the Vršac castle, along with wine and wind, the castle represents the main symbol of Vršac. The interesting history of the city is related to the most prominent people of the Serbian cultural scene: Jovan Sterija Popović, Paja Jovanović, Sultana Cijuk, Bora Kostić, Vasko Popa, Dragiša Brašovan…

This coat of arms first appeared in the Trade Charter of 1804. The Latin inscription on the edge of the shield, inside the circle, translates as the STAMP OF THE PRIVILEGED VRŠAC MUNICIPALITY. This stamp was in 1964 by this town’s statute designated to be coat of arms of the town of Vršac. The central part is filled with a graphic representation of everything that constitutes Vršac: a town with three churches, in the background, on the fringes of the mountains there are vineyards, the Vršac castle on the top, and wheat fields on the opposite side. Above the castle is the hand of Janko Halabura, a local hero from the time of the Uprising in Banat.

Through the efforts of the then Bishop of Vršac, Jovan Georgijević, (1749-1769), in 1750, construction of the Bishop’s Palace in Vršac began. The corner stone was consecrated on May 8, 1757, and the building was completed in 1763.

The project was made in the Baroque style, and with the extensive renovation at the beginning of the 20th century, the Court was “covered” in the Eclectic style. Inside the residence there is also

a house chapel dedicated to St Archangel Michael’s Synod. The chapel has a unique iconostasis, made of hard material, painted with the genealogy of Jesus Christ – the work of Nikola Nešković. In the chapel there is also a miraculous icon of the Mother of God named Vincanska Bezdinska. The most difficult period in the building’s history was in the middle of the 20th century, from 1941 to 1956, when it was not the seat of the Bishop of Banat.

THE SYNOD CHURCH

After the construction of the Eparchial residence, around the existing church, the foundations of the Synod Church of St. Nicholas were laid. The church was built in 1785 during the office of Bishop Nikola Dimitrijević.  The iconostasis was painted by Pavel Djurković and Aksentije Marković performed the wood engraving works. One of the most distinguished painters, Paja Jovanovic, designed the church bells and he donated to the church two, extraordinary valuable both in artistic and aesthetic sense, paintings: St Nicolas Saving the Condemned and St Angelina. Today, the paintings are part of the exhibition “Memory of Paja Jovanović” in the City Museum. The stained-glass windows were made after 1900 and depict the Nemanjić dynasty.

ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL

A magnificent Roman – catholic cathedral dedicated to St Gerhard, was built in 1863 and it is one of the symbols of the city. The church was built in Neogothic style. The stylistic Neogothic constant is visible through the entire project, architecturally and in interior. The walls of the church are richly painted with murals depicting scenes from the life of Christ. In the interior, the magnificent altar dedicated to St. Gerhard stands out. This church is also recognizable by its two-manual organ from 1912, which is under renovation. Thanks to the acoustics of the space, the church of St. Gerhard is sometimes used as a concert hall.

ST THEODORE OF VRŠAC

One of the specifics of Vršac is the fact that it has a protector, a saint, bearing the name of the town – St Theodore of Vršac. Bishop Teodor Nestorović led the people of Banat into uprising against the Turks, in 1594, holding the banner of St Sava.  Bishop was caught by Timisoara Pasha and skinned to death. He was canonized on 29th May 1994, since then, Vršac has been celebrating this day as the city’s day and the city’s patron saint. A church dedicated to this saint was sanctified on the Hill of Vršac in 2002.

THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

Due to efforts of the priest Trajan Oprea and Romanian bank Director Dr Petar Cepeniaga, as well as by financing by 80 benefactors, in 1913 the Romanian Orthodox Church was built. It is dedicated to the Assumption of God. The church was painted by Virđije Simionesku and the wood engraving was done by brothers, Nistor and Josif Bosiok.

THE CHAPEL OF HOLY CROSS

The oldest Roman Catholic Church in Banat is to be found above Vršac, at the Misa Hill. Apart from the Tower it is the oldest preserved building in the town. The church was under construction from 1720 to 1728. In front of the church a viewpoint was made, offering a magnificent view of the town and its surroundings. It is possible to reach the chapel by car, on the road from the southern side of the Vršac mountains, or on foot, using the stairs that lead from the viewpoint to the urban part of the city.

THE MESIĆ MONASTERY

The Mesić Monastery is located 11 km from Vršac in the town of Mesić and is dedicated to the birth of St. John the Baptist. There are different opinions about its origin, but the most probable one is that it was built in the 11th century by the followers of St. Cyril and Methodius. Today’s appearance the monastery acquired in 18th century. The residence was built in the classicistic style, and the new baroque belfry was added to the church.  Wall painting consists of three – layers of frescos created from 11th to 19th century. Apart from all the other icons treasured in it, Mesić Monastery is known to have one which is believed to be miraculous and it can be found on the God Mother’s throne. It is known under the name of God Mother Worthy Is, and was brought into this monastery in 1803.

THE SREDISTE MONASTERY

Središte Monastery is located in the village of Malo Središte, 11 km from Vršac. In that place there was a monastery, built in the 15th century, as an endowment of Jovan Branković.  After the church reform, in the 18th century, the monastery ceased to exist. On the site of the former monastery, in the period from 1995 to 2003, a new monastery dedicated to the Miraculous Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos was built.

Vršac Castle is built on top of a hill that dominates the surrounding plain at 399 meters above sea level. This fortification is a symbol of the city and its surroundings. Serbian despot Djuradj Branković comes here, after the fall of Smederevo under Turkish rule. By the Treaty of Karlovac in 1701, the building was characterized as a military fortress, and it was demolished on two occasions.

The restoration started with archaeological research at the end of the last century. The complete reconstruction is still not fully completed. The building works as a branch of the Vršac Town Museum.

The united municipality is progressing, receiving the Trade charter and then the Charter of the Free Imperial City. At the proposal of the Town’s Mayor Aleksandar Stojakovic, the construction of the new Town Hall began in 1859.

The new building was built in neo-gothic style and in its foundation a memorial, written in Latin and Serbian and signed by all prominent townsmen, was built into. The building got its present appearance after 1945, when its third part was built in the Brutalist style.

It was declared a Natural Monument in 2000 as it belongs to the category of natural goods of great importance. It spreads on the area of almost 6ha and it has been designed in a heterogeneous style in which influences of the French method of designing round flower beds mixes with free English style in arranging trees, lawns and bushes. Many rare and valuable species of ornamental shrubs, bushes and various flowers make this park a real botanical garden.

The Vršac region is ideal for viticulture. The Romans also had their plantations here. The treasurer of Hungarian king Laszlo II paid a barrel of Vršac wine ten and half gold coins in 1494. In the 19th century, the vineyard spread over 10,000 ha and was among the largest in Europe. Today, there are 15 registered wineries in Vršac and the surrounding areas. Many of them are small, family businesses, which achieve a significant part of their sales through tourist visits. Apart from Vršac itself, the village of Gudurica has historically been known for its wine production. It is still like that nowadays.
